Need some inspiration to get into the holiday spirit? Enjoy these can’t miss holiday podcast episodes and audiobook suggestions from Save!
We consider it our mission to spread joy, especially during the holidays. And one of the best ways to get into the spirit is to listen to holiday podcasts and audiobooks while you’re hanging out with family, cooking, or gift wrapping. Here’s a roundup of some of the best.
An incredibly popular weekly radio show and podcast, This American Life does just what the name implies, telling the stories of how America lives. For a good belly laugh, don’t miss one of their best holiday podcast episodes: the Comedians of Christmas Comedy Special. From third graders’ Christmas jokes to a debate on the awesomeness of Hanukkah to the trials and travails of spending the holidays at somebody else’s house, there’s truly something for everyone.
This American Life is SO good, it made our list twice! If you’re feeling overwhelmed by all your holiday shopping, take a step back to view the ridiculousness of it all in the Christmas and Commerce episode. The centerpiece is humorist David Sedaris’ Santaland Diaries, detailing his time as an elf at Macy’s. But the rest of the episode is worthwhile as well, from Ira Glass’ experience at the world’s largest toy store on Christmas Eve to David Rakoff’s portrayal of Sigmund Freud in a department store window display.
We could all use an occasional reminder of the simpler holidays of long ago (though we'd really miss online shopping!). Christmas Old Time Radio features 100 episodes of old radio performances with a Christmas theme. It’s a great way to decompress during the busy holiday season.
If you have kids, the feminist children’s podcast Girl Tales is always worth a listen. And whether you’re Jewish or just want to learn more about the Festival of Lights, this 40-minute musical featuring a strong girl who fights back when her right to celebrate Hanukkah is inspiring. Alternately titled A Hanukkah Story and Judah Maccabee, this one is a true don’t-miss for families!
The Herdmans are the worst kids ever. They drink. They smoke cigars. They even burned down an old toolshed. But through a series of unlikely events, they’re also starring in the church Christmas pageant! Find out how not only the Herdmans, but everyone connected with the play transforms, somehow pulling off The Best Christmas Pageant Ever. There’s also an excellent TV movie, but if you’re on the go, the audiobook is perfect.
