Wondering how to be a more positive person? Learn some tips to easily boost positivity from Save!
The past couple of years have been, well, interesting to say the least! Who couldn't use a lift? Did you know that the power to boost positivity lies within you? It’s not just a matter of positive thinking (though that certainly helps!). But there are several forms of positivity you can spark by changing your thoughts OR your behaviors.
Here’s a simple formula that sums up the human condition:
Thoughts + Feelings = Behaviors
If you remember elementary school math, then you’ll know that if you change any part of the equation, the other parts will naturally change as well. Because it's all about balance! So if you want more positivity (a feeling), then you have to change your thoughts and/or behaviors to keep the equation balanced.
When you think of positive feelings, joy might be the first one to come to mind. But there are many others as well, including:
If you could use more joy, try going after a different positive feeling. The goal is incremental progress, so every baby step counts.
Remember the equation? To increase your positivity, you need to change your thoughts, behaviors, or both. If you, like many people, sometimes have trouble wrangling your thoughts, focus on your behaviors instead. For example, you might:
The really cool thing about changing your behaviors is that it doesn’t matter what you’re thinking or feeling at the moment. You only need to do the action, and your thoughts and feelings will follow.
On the flip side, you can also increase positivity by decreasing negativity. Take stock of the things you do regularly. Are there any activities that really bring you down? Maybe too much time with a toxic person, or doom-scrolling your newsfeed before bed. Turn off your electronics an hour before you turn in. Set boundaries with people who don't make you feel energized. We all have a few primary obligations in life, but most of our “must-do” tasks are things we tell ourselves we “should do.”
Humans tend to operate mostly on autopilot, going through the day in a series of established habits. Make the effort to rewrite your scripts! Block out time in your schedule to do things that spark positive feelings, be kind to yourself when you forget, and keep trying. Over time, you will gradually establish new habits that make you feel energized and good.
