Mmmm, popcorn. Whether you’re watching a movie, snacking while you work from home, or gathering treats for a family game night, there’s just something about the taste of popcorn. It’s nostalgic. It’s simple. And it’s oh-so-yummy.
Store-bought microwave popcorn bags are convenient, sure. But you’re also paying extra for the pre-packaged bags.
You can save tremendously by popping your own kernels. It’s so easy. Plus, you can customize your flavors!
The following are two types of a DIY microwave popcorn recipe that rivals individual bagged popcorn. You can adapt each recipe with new flavors every time you munch.
For bagged microwave popcorn you create yourself, you only need popcorn kernels, oil, a paper bag, and your seasonings of choice. Here’s a basic recipe for three servings.
To make, mix the unpopped kernels and oil in a small bowl. Pour the coated kernels into the paper lunch bag. Fold the top of the bag twice to ensure it’s closed.
Set the bag in the microwave. Set the timer for 3 minutes. Be aware: the popcorn may be done in less time, as few as 2½ minutes. To avoid having the popcorn burn, stand by the microwave and turn it off when there are 2 seconds or longer between each pop.
Open the bag, and enjoy!
If you want microwave popcorn but you’re without a microwave (say, you’re on a camping trip), you can still get that fresh popcorn taste.
You can use similar ingredients as above, but use a high-smoke point oil, like canola or grapeseed oil. Increase the oil amount to 3 Tbsp.
First, you’ll want to heat the oil in a large saucepan on medium heat. Then, test a few kernels in the oil.
Once they’ve popped, add the remaining kernels. Cover the pot, remove it from the heat, and gently shake it for about 30 seconds so that the kernels can absorb the oil and heat.
Place the pot back on the burner slightly covered, so that some steam can escape. Once the popping slows to around 2 seconds or more between each pop, remove the pan from the heat. Pour the popcorn out into a bowl so it stops cooking in the pan.
The recipes above are for plain popcorn. If you like to keep it simple, stick with those.
You can also add ½ tsp. salt and/or your seasoning of choice to the kernels once they’re in the bag or in the pot. Sprinkle your seasoning on top and shake the closed bag or pot to mix. You might explore flavors like garlic powder, chili powder, cayenne powder, cumin, turmeric, or whatever spice you love.
You can also go sweeter, with spices like cinnamon or nutmeg. Experiment to see what you like.
Once the popcorn is popped, you can spray a butter alternative on your popcorn, or drizzle melted butter over the popcorn and gently toss. Some other flavor options include parmesan cheese shreds, melted chocolate, and nutritional yeast – get creative!
