Fun Flashlight Games for Kids to Try This Summer

Looking for great new activities for the kids? How about flashlight games in the dark? They’re perfect when the kids get to stay up late on weekends, or when your house is where the sleepover is happening. Read below to discover a few great flashlight games that are easy to set up — and easy on your wallet!

1. Follow the leader  — with a flashlight!

This game uses the same rules as the traditional follow-the-leader game. Once the group has chosen a leader, then everyone must follow that leader and do as they do. But, when you play it in the dark with a single flashlight, it adds an extra layer of difficulty to the game! Make sure this game happens in a safe space to prevent bumps and bruises. Give the flashlight to the leader, then have everyone else attempt to follow along in the dark.

2. Play flashlight tag

How do you play flashlight tag? It’s easy! One player gets the flashlight. Everyone else runs and hides. The player with the flashlight has to find the other players and tag them with the beam of light. The last player tagged gets the flashlight and becomes “it” for the next game.

A variation on this flashlight game is called “firefly tag.” To play this one, the person who is “it” (the firefly) flashes the flashlight every 30 seconds or so. When the light goes off, the firefly hides, and everyone else has to try to find and tag them.

3. Start a game of flashlight freeze dance

This game gets kids moving. It’s good for a lot of laughs, too. The idea is to have players shimmy and shake in the dark — but once someone shines a light their way, they have to freeze in whatever position they’re in.

4. Set up a flashlight scavenger hunt

For this game, you’ll need flashlights for each player, an assortment of objects to find, and a list that the hunters can use to check off items as they find them. Hide toys or goodies around the house to play this game indoors when the weather is bad. When the weather is good, make a nature-themed list of items that kids can safely find outdoors.

5. Make constellations, shapes, and more

Need an easy flashlight game to play after a long, tiring day? Grab a flashlight, some paper cups, and something like a pencil or a paper clip that you can use to make holes in the bottom of the cups. Use your pointy tool to poke holes that make constellations, shapes, or other designs, then turn the lights off, put the cup on a flashlight, and shine it on the ceiling to make the design come to life.

6. Play “hot and cold” with a twist

Warmer…warmer — no, getting colder! Remember playing this game? Your kids can play it, too — only with flashlights. You need two players to play. One hides an object somewhere in the room, the other shines a flashlight around to guess where it is hidden. Let them know if they’re warmer or colder depending on how close they shine the beam to the hidden object.

Have fun with new games for the kids — and save money!
