Summer is around the corner — find everything you need to know about sunscreen spray and lotion at Save.com, including tips for getting the most out of your sunscreen and saving money.
Summer is around the corner! And whether you're planning to spend your weekends at the beach, in the pool, or by the lake, sun protection should be top of mind. After all, this is the time of year when we all want to be outside as often as possible, even if it's just sipping your coffee on the porch.
There are a lot of types and brands of sunscreens out there — and it can be overwhelming to know what to look for. We'll go over a few key things to keep in mind so you get the most out of your next bottle!
Experts recommend sticking to a traditional lotion sunscreen over a spray. Though sunscreen spray is easy to apply, you need a lot more of it to be effective. So, it's better for your skin health — and your wallet — to use a lotion or gel option.
When you're browsing for sunscreen, you want to make sure you're buying a product with an SPF of at least 30. You also want to look for sunscreen that protects against both UVA and UVB radiation for maximum protection.
Water-resistant sunscreen is also a smart buy... even if you're not planning on swimming. It will typically last longer on your skin, especially on those sticky summer days. And if you're shopping for an environmentally-friendly sunscreen option for a snorkeling outing or scuba trip, look for a bottle that's "reef safe." Some beaches only permit reef safe sunscreen, since it has fewer chemicals that are damaging to the environment.
Just like food, personal care products have an expiration date... sunscreen included. Sunscreen loses its effectiveness after it's been opened for a year, so it's a good rule of thumb to buy a new bottle at the beginning of the summer.
When it comes to sunscreen application, we suggest putting it on inside, before you get dressed — that way, your clothing or swimsuit won't get in the way, and the sunscreen will have time to set. Ask your partner, friend, or kiddo to get that spot in the middle of your back if you can't reach it! And don't forget to apply sunscreen to your ears, lips, and the back of your hands, as well as sunscreen powder or sunscreen spray along the part in your hair.
One of the easiest ways to save money on sunscreen is by buying generic — do an ingredient comparison on a brand-name sunscreen with a generic one, and you'll probably find that the exact same ingredients are in both. Another way to save is by buying a lower SPF. Sometimes, a higher SPF will result in a higher price tag... but as long as you're using at least SPF 30, you'll be ok. Do you have a Flexible Spending Account through your job? Many types of sunscreen are eligible to purchase with pre-tax FSA money, whether online or at a pharmacy.
