Create Your Own Work Shutdown Routine

Whether you're someone who's always checking their work email, or your 'home office' is wherever you can find a clear space in your house, work-life balance is one of those things we all struggle with. And while we're guessing you have a morning routine (probably involving coffee!), maybe you don't have a workday shutdown ritual. Here, we'll go over everything you need to know about shutdown routines, and why it's important.

What is a shutdown routine?

A shutdown routine is a workday ritual that signals that your workday is done. It could be as simple as a one-step routine, or it could be a multi-stage wind-down process. Your shutdown routine should be something you can commit to doing every day, so it becomes just that - a routine.

Why is it important?

A shutdown routine is important because it signals the end of your workday - and helps you leave work where it should be (at work!). This kind of ritual tells your brain that the work part of your brain is done for the day... and now, you can take time to rest and recharge. If you're someone who feels guilty about taking too long to respond to emails, even if they're sent after-hours, having a workday shutdown ritual can help you wind down, relax, and alleviate some of that anxiety

Sample shutdown routine ideas

1. Reflect on your day. Whether in a journal or while you're driving home from the office, take a few moments to reflect on what you accomplished at work today.

2. Make a plan for tomorrow. Instead of closing your laptop and mentally juggling all of tomorrow's tasks, write down everything that needs to get done, and create a plan. This way, when you log off for the day, you'll have peace of mind knowing that you have a game plan.

3. Tidy up your workspace - online and IRL. Close out any unnecessary tabs on your computer, and clear any clutter from your desk. Arriving at a fresh workspace in the morning will set you up for a day of success.

4. Show some gratitude. There's nothing like ending a busy workday on a high note, even if it was a tough day at the office. Pay a compliment to a co-worker or take some time to reflect on what you're thankful for - this will help you leave work in a positive mindset and recharge you to come back tomorrow.
